Track Facts
The original squared-oval Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built in Indiana in 1909 and has been through many revisions over the years. The original rectangular oval is 2.5 mi long.
Interestingly the speedway was envisioned by Carl G. Fisher in 1905. After a trip to Europe, helping friends racing in France, he realised the US needed a better method of testing cars if they were to compete with Europe and their craftmanship.
The current Indianapolis circuit, shown here, is a 2.439 mi long, 14-turn road course that was newly reconfigured before the Grand Prix of Indianapolis in May 2014: an additional race for the IndyCar series for 2014 on. The circuit holds IndyCar (the Indianapolis 500 and Grand Prix of Indianapolis) and NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity races.
